hiking in marin: the tennessee valley trail

Kate Parrish

this weekend we were looking for a quick and easy hike to start our morning before some errands that took up our afternoon – point reyes is a usual favorite of mine for hiking, but muir woods is much closer and i often forget how many great hikes and adventures are just 35 minutes from our doorstep. this hike is perfect for any level – whether you do the full 10 miles or turn around halfway through, the entire trail is along the coast and gorgeous.

a few more details:

  • the drive is about 30 - 40 minutes from sf and there is ample parking
  • the hike is 9.7 miles and takes about 4 hours round trip [can be shortened to your liking]
  • there are two starting points: the trailhead or muir beach. i prefer to start at muir beach so that  after your hike you can enjoy the beach firepits or the lawn at pelican inn  [*note, the inn is only open to the public on weekends]
  • stop at mountain home inn afterwards, even it it's just for wine and fries on the patio

happy monday!
